My little company has had a good January. As a result, my guys tell me there's a surplus in our Charitable Donations budget. Based on revised projections, this surplus will reach the mid five-figure range by summer.

Now we've already met our committments to our Partner Charities for the fiscal year. This is New Money. And as the company, I get to decide where it goes.

Since I grew up in a disadvantaged area called North Central, I think it's incumbant upon me to put this money back into the community.

What I'd like to do is charter a small jet, and fly a dozen or so kids (and a parent or guardian) down to Toronto for a 3-Game Bluejays Series. It would be a jazz, giving these kids a weekend in The Big City they would never be able to afford, and would probably never forget.

What my conscience tells me is that I should use this money to establish a Summer Job Program, putting local kids to work in the community - fixing it up and that sort of thing.

It's a tough choice. As you know, I support Jobs For People, but a kid is only kid once. What price do you put on a Once-In-A-Lifetime Experience? Is Work-Experience and income in a disadvantaged neighbourhood more important?

I don't have a lot of time to think about this. Whatever I do, logistically speaking, I have to start planning it now.

Opinion?

I'd do the jobs thing. It's the whole teach-a-man-to-fish thing that appeals to me.

Why not do both. Go ahead with the job program and buy a dozen RoughRiders tickets or something like that.

You're right, Dennis, it's a hard call.... As a home-town girl, I'm aware of the problems of the North Central district....

I think Quik Silver has a good idea -- take a little from column A and a little from column B, balance it out some.

Let us know what you decide to do, I'm quite intrigued. And very admiring.

Hi Dennis. As a past resident of N. Central and one viscerally aware of the issues plaguing that area I second Zoot Capri's admiration. Good on ya! Damn but there are some wretched looking areas thereabouts and the tired warzone look of the old shops along 5th Ave.? Shameful. But the notion of enabling a squad of local workers to shine up the old stomping grounds? Definitely worth the highest praise. I had the good fortune of living next to an elderly retired United Church minister who, daily, would patrol a few blocks with his broom and shovel and little cart to prevent an unfortunate incident involving discarded syringes or whatever. He knows the area better than most and can speak on any number of global issues but every day he is out there attending to this problem. Would I ever love to see the look on his face if he were to encounter a group of local youth encroaching on his territory. Numerous activists that I know personally would happily discuss such a proposal. Does a body good to hear such news.

Thanks for the input everybody.

I don't agree about the Roughrider game though. Lots of people donate tix for that, and the "Rider Rookie" section is also fairly cheap. But the Jays are special, and I liked the idea of an extra-special time. The kind of thing that I never had as a boy.

At this point I'm leaning towards the Summer Job Program. For the same price as the Jays trip, you can buy 8 weeks full-time work for 15-20 people. That just might make a difference to the community.

I'm not doing this to be Joe Good-Guy. I HATE paying taxes! Especially to the FEDERAL government. Personally, I think executive federalism is a concept whose time has come, and gone. So if I can put a few bucks into the community and keep them out of the greedy grasping hands of Revenue Canada, I'm more than happy to do it. So please don't lavish praise where it's not necessary. This is a business decision for me. Like choosing an accounting firm, or a lighting supplier.

But the Jays are special,

Yeah, I remember those days.

Seriously though, I tend to subscribe to your "you`re only a kid once" sentiment. It sounds like you`re doing a lot of good things where you live on a very practical nuts-and-bolts sort of level. IMHO, public philanthropy should be a balanced experience. A fun thing like this would be a great experience for all involved, including yourself. If it`s something you want to do then go for it!!

Me - a Philanthropist?? Let's not get carried away here! Carnegie, Rockefeller, Ford - THOSE guys were Philanthropists.

The main branch of The Regina Public Library was originally built "Through the liberality of Andrew Carnegie." I estimate I've invested in excess of ten-thousand hours there over the years in my attempt to compensate for the lack of a formal education.

I'm not a Philanthropist. I'm just a guy with a little company and a great team backing me up. They make it possible for me to throw a few bucks here and there - instead of letting the vacuous void of Ottawa siphon it away to fund all kinds of bad craziness...

Go for the experience the kids will not forget. Being a kid is once, as you said. Thet will remember it as a pleasant experience. Jobs ? Takes a miracle to remember a job as a pleasant one.

You are a philanthropist, Dennis, and it's a wonderful thing that you are giving something back to your community.

And my admiration continues unabated...
