Gay activist Peter Tatchell escorted from Holocaust Memorial

quote:
Peter Tatchell denies his protest at the commemoration was inappropriate. Nevertheless, he was ejected from a Holocaust service at Westminster marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz where over 1 million people were killed under the Nazis.

Tatchell was apparently protesting against Conservative asylum proposals and shouted "never again, today means not closing our doors to refugees fleeing persecution." Anyway, Scotland Yard said he was detained and escorted from Westminster Hall but he was not arrested.

The event at Westminster Hall was attended by hundreds of holocaust survivors and veterans of World War II.

The Conservative policy he's protesting is completely illegal under European and International law. Even reporters were shocked when, in an interview, Mr. Howard stated he would withdraw from both the 1951(?) Convention on Asylum and the EU in order to limit refugees. This has become a pissing contest between Labour and the Tories to see who can be the most restrictive to asylum seekers, claiming they're all bogus and that "real" asylum seekers would arrive legally in the UK.

I'm undecided as to Mr. Tatchell's tactics, but I agree with his linking of asylum with the Holocaust. How many victims would have been saved had the allies allowed Jews and Roma and all those persecuted to claim asylum early on? How many people are being tortured and killed now is all kinds of conflicts are yet are still turned away from the UK and other western countries?

Michael Howard's own parents were Romanian Jewish refugees. Some people never learn.

Typical homo.

So mentally deranged that he can't possibly believe that each and every event, anytime, anywhere, is all about him, and his obsessions.

Why didn't he just wear chaps and attempt to hump someone's leg? After all, every day is homo day.

Just out of curiosity, what does the protester's being gay have to do with anything in the world? There is no mention of it in the linked BBC article. What the hell does it have to do with his actions, and why is it in the thread title?

Does it add something to the story? In what way is his sexuality related to his actions? Why do I even know he is gay? I don't get it.

Arbourman —

It would be kind of like if Billy Graham came to your town, the newspaper headlines would all read "Evangelist Billy Graham...." etc. It is what Tatchell is best-known for, both inside and outside the LGBT community.

His most recent targets previous to this, for instance, have been homophobic Jamaican singers, and he succeeded in having the UK either deny them passports, investigate them on hate crimes charges, or have the singers promise not to sing certain songs.

Also, in the past, Tatchell has been vocal in claiming that flight from persecution based on sexual orientation should be included as a valid reason to be granted refugee status.

I presume those were all reasons that queerday used that headline, and I just copied the headline to use as a thread title.

good 'nuff?
