Canada should make an announcement like this: quote: Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer has ruled out Australian involvement in any United States-led military action in Iran."The American position is that they just don't rule in or rule out the military option," he said. "That's particularly in the context of Iran's nuclear program, which the whole of the international community is concerned about. "We're not planning to get involved with any military action against anybody.
I suppose there's a weasel word there: "Not PLANNING to get involved"... Still, Stephen Harper hasn't ever gone that far. And Australia is ruled by his right-wing buddy John Howard. And Howard is facing an election any day now, so is under pressure to refuse stupid imperialist quagmires. http://abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/10/02/2049069.htm?section=australiaA

Jeff, I'm a little surprised at your seeing anything positive in this statement (even though you do acknowledge the "weasel word").Of course, both Iran and China have reported this as a firm refusal by Australia, but it's in their PR interest to do so. What Downing actually said can be paraphrased this way: quote: Seymour Hersh says the U.S. is planning military action against Iran. We don't believe that. The U.S. isn't planning military action against anyone. And neither are we.
Sheds a different light, no? Especially from the mouth of a man whose government maintains some 1,500 troops in and around Iraq. I wonder what military action they're "not planning" in Iraq?
