Canada should make an announcement like this:

quote:
Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer has ruled out Australian involvement in any United States-led military action in Iran.

"The American position is that they just don't rule in or rule out the military option," he said.

"That's particularly in the context of Iran's nuclear program, which the whole of the international community is concerned about.

"We're not planning to get involved with any military action against anybody.

I suppose there's a weasel word there: "Not PLANNING to get involved"... Still, Stephen Harper hasn't ever gone that far. And Australia is ruled by his right-wing buddy John Howard.

And Howard is facing an election any day now, so is under pressure to refuse stupid imperialist quagmires.

Jeff, I'm a little surprised at your seeing anything positive in this statement (even though you do acknowledge the "weasel word").

Of course, both Iran and China have reported this as a firm refusal by Australia, but it's in their PR interest to do so.

What Downing actually said can be paraphrased this way:

quote:
Seymour Hersh says the U.S. is planning military action against Iran. We don't believe that. The U.S. isn't planning military action against anyone. And neither are we.

Sheds a different light, no? Especially from the mouth of a man whose government maintains some 1,500 troops in and around Iraq. I wonder what military action they're "not planning" in Iraq?

My guess is Australia's intel says a zel zel missle or one of Iran's other modified ones can reach Australia..and Australia is playing it smart. Lots of sand in Australia and glass is too sharp to step on.

One of Iran's missles is a multiple warhead type called the starburst or something. So yeh I can see the US and there little "you know what" countries lipping off like arogant cowards till they too find out they can become bombed into the stoneage. Then they will shut up like they now do for North Korea.

I think he is trying to tell the electorate that he won't pull an Iraq II in Iran.

Do I think he might do it anyway? Sure. But it becomes harder to do so after you've issued a quasi-denial like this one.

So, if he later says: "I said we weren't PLANNING to invade Iran, but now we are going to invade anyway" I think that is the kind of thing that permanently damages reputations and political futures.

Howard the Liberal is gone after November anyway. He's desperate and will say anything at this point.
