I heard this story on the radio a few weeks ago but didn't think to discuss it until now.

Seems what with the Olympic construction in BC, there is an impending shortage of truckers.

Now the logical thing would be to blitz the Grade 11 and 12 classes in high schools and say, here kids is a lucrative profession you can get in on with great job prospects.

The solution discussed on the radio: bring in truckers from Vietnam.

Gawd - Alberta has all your truckers. There are soooo many here. Amazing really.

Maybe I could export a few for you.

Incidentally, I've noticed that lately the price of diesel has been going up along with the price of gas. Not as volatile, but following the general trend, keeping a constant spread between its price and the average gasoline price.

What's that going to mean for the trucking business? Especially independent truckers? Not good if it keeps up, I'd figure.

What's it going to mean for cost comparisons between trucks and rail? I have this feeling that fuel is a smaller component of the cost of rail freight, a greater part being rail maintenance and whatnot, stuff the trucking business gets to externalize (the government pays for highway maintenance).
