A coalition of community associations and neighbourhood residents is opposing plans by Loto-Québec to build a larger casino on a tract of land in their neighbourhood. A spokeswoman from St. Colomba House (a longstanding local "settlement house" where many associations, a soup kitchen, etc. are located) is extremely concerned about the impact a casino in a poor neighbourhood such as the Point would have on people in the area: http://Montreal.cbc.ca/regional/servlet/View?filename=qc-casino20050613

These people are just so unbelievably stupid and shortsighted.

Any ideas of how to best support the residents?

I'd think a good place to start would be to contact Patricia Murphy, the spokesperson for Saint Columba House, or someone else at that community centre:

I'm sure they'd welcome support from people in other neighbourhoods. There is a centre that helps poor people (food baskets, drop-in centre, cheap or free clothing and household goods, references) very close to your place, in Mile End, it is located at the corner of St-Urbain and Bernard. Believe it is called the Mile-End Community Mission or something like that; sometimes I drop things I don't need off there - they might have ideas too about what people in other neighbourhoods could do. As soon as I've spoken to people I know who work or live in the Point or thereabouts, I'll get back to all on this issue.

There have already been huge social problems with the existing casino. It is of course advertised as a tourist draw where people can indulge in some entertainment and the thrill (?) of parting with some extra cash, but actually the main clientele is pensioners, ordinary workers, many people with very little money indeed.
