(Haven't been here for ages....so I don't know if you've discussed this yet?)

Anyone been following the 'minutemen' movement? I think this could be a HUGE issue in the months and years to come. For those who don't know....it's a citizens group that has begun patroling the Southern Border of the U.S., as to report to Border Security unlawful entry. Media seems to either be ignoring it...or (intentionally?) misinterpreting it as racism. You probably already know that businesses in the U.S (and it's spreading to Canada) have for faaaar too long been treating these people like disposable, exploitable, slaves. These workers have no chance of even considering unionization. Immigrants ( many if not most illegal)are much more likely to work in unsafe, dangerous work conditions. Twice as many immigants die on the job, than any other group in the U.S. I read a while back, the book "Reefer Madness", (the title belies the content) and part of the book speaks of how illegal (most Mexican)farm workers often live in make-shift tents in the desert, or caves! The local citizens complain because any sight of these residences, can drive down their own property value.
This 'grassroots uprising' is growing exponentially. Lou Dobbs on CNN was first to stir the masses. I've been watching him the last few years investigate things like..outsourcing, freetrade, offshore tax havens, illegal immigration. Bill O'Reilly (I know he's an idiot) realizing this could greatly increase his already skyrocketing ratings.... now rants on about the issue daily!!
Anyone else been following all this?

Thought I'd put this up top briefly, again. Either no one is interested (which is fine ) or you didn't see it....

I don't think people realize how significant this uprising really is. Fox and Bush are going to have to deal with it at some point...Schwarzeneger has sided with the 'minutemen'. There was also a radio station that put up a huge billboard(s) with the words Los Angelos Mexico, X-ing out the word California. With a huge statue famous in Mexico overlapping the buildings in L.A. I'm sure it was just an innocent way to attract Latinos to check out their station, or to get free advertising due to the 'Hoopla', but it was pretty 'cheeky' nevertheless. I'd like to zoooom forward and see if the border down their will be further wiped out in the next decade.....or.... dramatically redefined ?And can either be done without rioting in the streets?

Similar uprisings have happened before, although most of the others were almost a complete bust. NPR did one of several pieces on it a couple of weeks ago. Bottom line: it's only a small number of people. Although it may appear that they slowed the number of people coming in through that section of the border, it has been accompanied by an increase in traffic in other sections. On top of that, the traffic in the area that they were patrolling has historically slowed at this time of year because of the seasonal heat. Especially when you consider how tied agriculture and big business are to a supply of cheap labor, the US government (and particularly a Republican one) simply hasn't the stomach to address this issue.

They started in Arizona? and are in the process of expanding across the country. Even up North...I think that's more a publicity stunt to show their opponents that it is not a racist movement, even thought they, or anyone, realizes Canadians aren't flocking illegally across the border to take service or farming jobs. Gordo has created more than enough low paying jobs at home, to fill the need!!
