Bermuda's electrical authority plans to sink a huge a first-of-its-kind undersea power turbine. The currents are calculated to power the turbine sufficient to provide 10 per cent of the electrical needs of the island's 65,000 people.

It's my sincere hope that B.C. Hydro is following this closely before it runs more transmission lines from the mainland to Vancouver Island or further considers the piping there of natural gas.
All maritime provinces might do well,in fact, to follow this power project of Bermuda's electrical authority.

First link I could find...

quote:
The 45-meter generator would take advantage of constant ocean currents off Bermuda, making it more efficient than large wind turbines. Even slow currents can be turned into high power.

The generator would be dropped between 75m and 200m below the waves, providing power to a substation on land that would feed into the electric company's power grid. The depth of the moored generator means that storms wouldn't damage it.

Sounds spiffy!

kimmy,

"Spiffy" is right. The introductory post was the re-writing of a one-paragraph Maclean's magazine item. Your link provided much more information.

This project should leave quite a bit of fossil fuel in the ground - plus lots of garbage out of the air. Eventually, perhaps there'll be more than the one unit. I visualize it working with both wind power and photovoltaic - particularly the latter, given Bermuda's climate.
