In case anybody here uses Rogers to access the internet, as of Dec. 15 Rogers will no longer provide access to Usenet. Read it the announcement here.

What bollocks. They just outsourced their Usenet feed to Giganews last year, now they want to do away with offering it altogether. And customers who still want Usenet access will be forced to pay extra for it, by subscribing to a service from Giganews or Supernews.

What nonsense. Usenet is a tremendous resource. Kind of an annoying and unwieldy protocol, but it does its job in the end despite that. A surprising number of people still use it, and I don't doubt Rogers will lose a little business because of it. At any rate, maintaining a Usenet service is an increasingly trivial matter these days given the continuing growth of mass storage, and this is especially the case for a large company like Rogers, as storing a fairly comprehensive Usenet archive is no more expensive for a company with 400,000 users than for a company with 2,000 users. Bollocks, as you say.

I don't know about Rogers usenet, but when I used sympashitco hispeed the usenet service was so bad I bought a subscription to a private Usenet service. I always used usenet for binary mp3's.

I doubt the problem is storage, or even bandwidth since Rogers charges for exceeding their bandwidth caps ... their problem is probably more of a legal one, fearing being held responsible for any illegal materials posted to their news servers.

You can read all Usenet groups, so far as I know, using "Google Groups" -- these days, I imagine some people think Google invented them, and have never heard of "usenet." Is it the relative clunkiness of the interface that turns people off this option?

Google does not carry the binary newsgroups. Lots of people use usenet for binaries.... Some of it is even legitimate.

Ah, right.

< bifocals, dentures >

When I started reading Usenet news, it was on a VT-100 terminal connected to the UVic mainframe. Green characters on a black screen. Not much use for binaries.

Rogers used to run their own NNTP servers until a year or so ago, then they outsourced it to Giganews. So technically Rogers no longer runs a news server and instead forwards all NNTP traffic to Giganews' servers.

Normally I would just use Google Groups to post to places like talk.origins, rec.bicycles.racing, etc. But I also like to download Belgian TV cycling coverage from alt.binaries.multimedia.sports, and Google Groups doesn't offer access to binary groups.

Typical Rogers, what they give you with one hand (faster speeds), they take away with the other (cutting access to Usenet).

According to Broadband Reports:

quote:
Customers of Canadian cable provider Rogers have realized they'll no longer have Usenet service as of December 15. Of course customers weren't notified via e-mail; they instead noticed the decision only because the site FAQ had changed. Rogers claims that two things led to the decision: fewer people are using Usenet, and "as a member of Canadian Coalition Against Internet Child Exploitation (CCAISE) Rogers is committed to reducing the effectiveness of Usenet as a distribution vehicle for child exploitation images."

Don't tell me they're going to use the protect the children excuse to block access to an entire part of the internet. What's next, blocking access to IRC, FTP, HTTP?

If you're a Rogers Subscriber (or anyone else for that matter) check out the list of free servers that will provide you access to the Usenet NewsGroups at Dump Rogers blog

Ah, kemosabe, you had the benefit of a screen. I had to read them on a beat up old DECwriter. I went through ribbons like Elton John goes through glasses.

Decwriters? Decwriters? Try IBM 2741's or better yet TTY33's. Actually I think that was before Usenet.

Does anyone here have access to a usenet server with binaries groups (specifically alt.binaries.fonts)?
