Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada
LABOUR SOLIDARITY RALLY
TUESDAY JANUARY 27TH
6:00 PM

WHY? Help support brothers and sisters involved in an increasingly desperate struggle to earn a fair first contract from TORONTO 1'S parent company CRAIG MEDIA. A-CHANNEL Edmonton has been on strike for close to 5 months now with NO movement from DREW CRAIG and his merry band of corporate greed-mongers. Most employees in the company make 40-60% LESS PAY than those doing the same job in the same market Wešre certainly not asking for GLOBAL or CTV type money, but an average salary of $27,000/year is just not acceptable for a job that requires an average investment of 3 years education. Ratings in Edmonton have fallen almost 60% since the strike, but apparently that's not enough, ratings for their flag-ship station TORONTO 1 must also be hit for us to reach a fair settlement.

WHO? There will be many speakers on labour issues including Federal NDP LEADER JACK LAYTON, striking employees, and many representatives from labour and civil rights groups from across the province.

WHEN? Time and date are listed above, there is a live broadcast from
7-8:00 pm that we hope to affect.

WHERE? Where it matters most, the TORONTO 1 studio, office at 25 ONTARIO STREET, on the corner of King and Ontario (5 blocks east of Jarvis).
SHOW UP LOUD, NASTY, AND READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

MORE INFO? If you want to be a speaker, or just have any more questions on the rally call MIKE ORMEROD AT 1- 780-709-0547 or email [email protected]

Not a problem, because I don't think many folks watch Toronto One to begin with.

I am already in full compliance with the boycott, and I didn't even know about it.

Great news. After a long and difficult struggle, our brothers and sisters at A-Channel have reached a tentative agreement.

Thanks to Toronto and everybody for their solidarity. And most of all kudos to Edmontonians who turned off A-Channel in droves. The viewership of their suppertime news show dropped by 60% during the course of the strike.

Memo to Calgarians: in the interest of engendering a friendly rivalry, try topping that next time there is a media strike in your town.

A key factor in the settlement was all the secondary picketing at advertisers. Going to the Brick, London Drugs, etc. caused lots of concern for A-Channel, and was also lots of fun.

On a side note, exhibit #3,756 of how stupid labour laws are in our province. A-Channel was able to get an injunction against us making too much noise outside the Calgary studio. An Edmonton judge ruled the production studio of A-Channel in Edmonton extended into Calgary, the sidewalk outside of A-Channel in Calgary, and partway down the street. We weren't allowed to gather outside the studio on 7th Avenue, and could only make noise from across the street, or in the next block.
