From the article:
quote:
Already, thanks to cell-phone technology that can track subscribers' whereabouts, retailers have access to technology that can tell when a particular customer walks into a store. With that information in hand, stores could conceivably tailor marketing messages to people based on demographic data or on answers to questions they were asked when they signed up for cell-phone service.

Imagine that - walking into a store and they know who you are and the kinds of things you like. Sound vaguely like the kind of service we used to get before everything blew up into a supersized box.

just installed web-connected appliances in a new mansion out here. connect them to your PDA, cell ,or implant, and you've got your fridge telling you to pick up milk.
now if I was an advertisor that would suggest an opportunity, like say a chip in the packaging that slipped a trojan into your house system, for a fee. then you can get the right brand, size ,quantity,analysis..etc.
if I were the government, or their operative contractor, this would suggest other benefits.
efficient,controlled and disturbing.
