Dedicated babblers will recall that the US recently made a presentation showing certain kinds of explosive devices, which it said were made in Iran. That was two weeks ago:

quote:
There was a slideshow depicting three main routes from Iran into Iraq which, the officials maintain, are used to smuggle in weapons and weapons parts. Some weapons parts were also on display in the briefing room including the mortar round parts that an explosives expert says was manufactured in Iran. The expert also presented a particular brand of rocket-propelled grenade that he said was manufactured only in Iran.

But the U.S. officials focused mainly on a deadlier version of the improvised explosive device: the explosively formed penetrator. It's a tin-can-shaped explosive covered with a lid of copper that turns into molten rock and pierces through armored vehicles.

So imagine my surprise to read this story today!

quote:
The Wall Street Journal reports troops "uncovered a makeshift factory used to construct advanced roadside bombs that the U.S. had thought were made only in Iran." The main feature of the find were several copper liners that are the main component of EFPs. But, The New York Times reports, "while the find gave experts much more information on the makings of the E.F.P.’s, which the American military has repeatedly argued must originate in Iran, the cache also included items that appeared to cloud the issue."

What? Not made in Iran?

Well, surely then - the Iranians showed them how to build them?

No?

Well, let's just blunder into Iran anyways, and if we don't find any evidence of any wrongdoing we can just gush about how great we are making things for women, and how we're bringing in democracy (which we took away in 1953).

The concept of the modern shape charge has been around since the late 19th century, though it did not come into use in any serious manner until tanks came onto the battlefield in quantity. The theory and technological sophistication level is not that much above what could be made in your garage.

My understnading is one of the most effective weapons the Vietnamese used against the Americans was a discarded tomato soup can inserted in a discarded bean can along with gunpowder residue from used american artillery shells and triggered with discarded american matches on a tripwire. In other words, this IED was made entirely of American garbage. Iran's help was not necessary.

Perhaps the Iranians are also shipping rocks to Palestinian youths.

They've got ROCKS??? Oh my god...they must be stopped..

I'm reminded of a great simpsons line..

"That board with a nail in it may have defeated us. But the humans won't stop there. They'll make bigger boards and bigger nails, and soon, they will make a board with a nail so big, it will destroy them all!" - Kang.
