November 4, 2004 - Female firefighter feels targeted by union

quote:
VANCOUVER - The female firefighter embroiled in a high-profile human rights fight says her union is trying to turn her fellow firefighters against her.

Burnaby fire captain Boni Prokopetz has alleged she suffered years of sexual harassment and discrimination at her Burnaby firehall.

She has also named her union as one of the respondents in her formal complaint with the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal and the City of Burnaby.

She will be working on an interim basis until April, when the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal will hear her case.

I spoke with Ms. Prokopetz's husband in the fall, just before she was ordered back to work and asked what people could do. He told me that she asked that people keep the heat on Burnaby city council. I was very glad to hear this development this morning -- it's about time that some of her co-workers came forward.

I watched a similar situation play out at the main local employer here not so long ago. I won't go into the details on a public board but suffice it to say that the union brothers (and I'm not anti-union, by the way) were less than supportive and not just in one situation either. It was infuriating to think that these situations still go on -- I left the military years ago because of sexual harassment and discrimination. (As an aside, it turned out to be the best thing I ever did but it should not have happened in the way that it did. It robbed me of my livelihood and my pension.)

Good on the co-workers! It's too bad they didn't do it ages ago, but at least they're doing it now!

Suits settled out-of-court.

quote:
BURNABY, B.C. - A B.C. fire captain has settled her sexual harassment and discrimination complaint against the Burnaby Fire Department, the city and the firefighters' union, the Burnaby Firefighters Association said Thursday.

A statement from the association said none of the parties admitted liability. No other details about the confidential settlement were released.
