This is a seismic shift in Korean politics. The Uri party supports impeached president Roh, a former human rights lawyer who is now likely to return to the presidency. A leftist party controls the South Korean parliament for the first time ever. The third-largest party is now Democratic Labour, a union-based party, which gains seats for the first time.

code:

old new
Uri 49 152
Grand National Party 137 121
Millenium Democratic P. 61 9
Democratic Labour P. 0 10
United Liberal Dem’s 10 4
Others 14 3
Total seats 273 299

Dick Cheney has already flown to Seoul to do damage control, aware that anger against US foreign policy has been the Uri party's best weapon. Uri is expected to pursue a more conciliatory approach to North Korea, in conflict with US policy.

Cheney and the two Koreas

Woo-hoo! Could this lead to peace between the two Koreas?

Y'know, if it weren't for all the people he'd kill and mutilate, four more years of Bush wouldn't be such a bad thing. He seems to be pushing the whole world to the left.

A new slogan!

A vote for the NDP is a vote against Bush!

:-) Uri is more centre than left, but in a country with South Korea's historical aversion for non-right-wing governments, that's a huge victory, especially given how the closest thing Korea has to the NDP performed.
