The Brussels-based International Lesbian and Gay Association ILGA will hold its World Conference next week - coinciding with the meeting of the UN Human Rights Commission.

The 53-nation Commission is unlikely to take up the issue, however, a spokesperson for the UN said. The Commission's plenary session is expected to last only a few days and the agenda has been set.
The proposal had been put forward by Brazil and supported by Canada and most of the European Union states. Brazil dropped the motion when it became clear the Vatican and Arab countries led by Egypt would not let it pass.
The Vatican and the 56 member nations of the Islamic Conference also fought Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan to give the partners of some gay and lesbian UN workers the same benefits as the spouses of heterosexual employees.

At least the Vatican doesn't have a vote.

The Vatican may not have a vote, but they have a seat, and they are not chary about using all the power, influence (and I'm sure bribery and blackmail) that they can muster to achieve their warped ends.
And anyway, if the Vatican gets a seat, why not Mecca? Or any other world religions? It's ridiculous -- the Vatican representatives should be thrown out on their asses!

You can thank the Facists (Mussolini, namely) for that since he made a little area in Rome it's own country.

Who cares what Mussolini did? Mussolini did not give them their own seat at the UN, obviously. They should be thrown out of the General Assembly!

This should definitely be something to achieve.

Well obviously, if Mussolini hadn't invented the Vatican City State, then they wouldn't even have a decline membership for as Chapter II, Article 4 of the UN charter states:
quote:Membership in the United Nations is open to all other peace-loving states which accept the obligations contained in the present Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, are able and willing to carry out these obligations.

Well, how can the United States be allowed to sit in, if it's only for "peace-loving" states? Seriously. And from a queer perspective, the Vatican is NOT what I would call "peace-loving", by any stretch of the imagination. They are like a gigantic effing Salem.
Secondly, what are these "obligations"?

This leads me to my previous point: the UN is useless and should be disbanded. Don't expect anything from it.

The Vatican doesn't have a UN seat, they have observer status like the Palestinian authority, the European Community, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and many others. It doesn't prevent them from teaming up with the bigots, of course, but they aren't a UN member.
I thought Brazil did a great thing when they made this bid to entrench lesbian/gay rights. The reformed UN Human Rights Council, maybe, will be more willing to pass the initiative now that Council members are going to be invetigated for human rights standards.
