Crude oil rose more than $5 to a record on concerns that Israel may be preparing to attack Iran, while a strike in Brazil and renewed militant activity in Nigeria threaten to cut supplies.

Oil rallied to a record high of $146.90 a barrel in New York after the Jerusalem Post said Israeli war planes practiced over Iraq, adding to speculation the country is preparing to attack Iran.

Meanwhile, the US economic meltdown continues:

Fannie Mae (FNM, Fortune 500) shares tumbled nearly 50% and Freddie Mac (FRE, Fortune 500) stock plunged 43% in pre-market trading, at the end of a week that has seen increasing concern about the government-sponsored enterprises' financial soundness. So far this week, Fannie's stock has plunged 30% and Freddie is down 45%.

The two firms own or back $5 trillion worth of home mortgages.

Bush's handlers said oil was supposed to drop to $20 or $30/bbl if they bombed Iraq and re-wrote that country's national energy policy for them.

Here's what will happen. They'll fly hundreds of sorties and take out nuclear and military facilities in and around Tehran. Most of Iran's military capabilities will be annihilated. U.S.A.F. will suffer a few casualties, but basically it will be Shock and Awe lite.

Not even close says Dave DeBatto, former U.S. Army Counterintelligence Special Agent 99

"Israel (who had thus far stayed out of the fray by letting the U.S. military do the heavy lifting) is attacked by Hezbollah in a coordinated and large scale effort. Widespread and grisly casualties effectively paralyze the nation, a notion once thought impossible. Iran’s newest ally in the region, Syria, then unleashes a barrage of over 200 Scud B, C and D missiles at Israel, each armed with VX gas. Since all of Israel is within range of these Russian built weapons, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and virtually all major civilian centers and several military bases are struck, often with a result of massive casualties."

Way off base. There's no way for Hezbollah to actually invade Israel, they are after all primarily a defensive force. They can launch small missiles into the very north of Israel but it's doubtful that would paralyze the country.

And it's also unlikely that Syria would sign its own death warrant by launching WMDs into Israeli civilian centers. But even if they decided to do that what's to stop Israel from knocking out Syria's air defences in a first-strike operation and then going after the SCUD sites?

Iran is a diferent story though and the US would have a real fight on its hands if they restrict themselves to using only conventional weapons. The easiest way to defeat them would be to detonate an EMP device over the country then go in and take out the nuclear sites. Pretty sure someone in the Pentagon has thought of this already.

In 1982, a French Exocet missile sunk HMS Sheffield, and badly damaged a freight carrier. The HMS Glamorgan's crew was able to visual an incoming Exocet coming in under radar detection and was able to turn, but was still hit port side.

Iranian Sunburn missiles(Russian) are over twice as fast(mach 2.5 to 2.9) as the Exocet, of which they also have some number of.

Israeli intel: 40,000 missiles, rockets in Lebanon I think they managed to fire off 4000 or so rockets in the 2006 conflict.
