how is your community commemorating it? is it still perceived to be relevant? what should the tone of memorials be? other thoughts?

Anna, I thought people might be interested in this discussion from last year, about songs to sing at a memorial service.

I usually wear a commemorative button on my coat each year (or pick one up from a woman at the subway), but I haven't attended a vigil for some time. A year doesn't go by that I don't remember though.

I was in Montreal on that tragic day and the impact of the murders remains forged into my soul.

May the memories of their young lives be for a blessing.

Thanks, Mishei. I was writing an exam in the next building of the University of Montreal that night! Of course we knew nothing about it. Everyone is in a fog at exam time, which is how the killer managed to achieve his aim...

Remember that survivors of the massacre and families of the dead women (and other engineering students, usually little inclined to progressive causes) lobbied successfully for changes in the gun laws, and more generally, to raise awareness about violence against women and violence in general.

thank you all. i produce a feminist radio show, and i am in the process of researching the subject of the montreal massacre and its commemoration across canada. i attend memorials every year, but this year, in my city, there will be no city sponsored memorial as the result of a lack of volunteers.

I will go to the Halifax Explosion memorial in the morning and light candles and read the poems in the evening.

December 6th is a sad day indeed.

Just a (awful) thought. Last year I was the managing-editor of my university newspaper. Around this time of year, a white cross for each victim of the montreal massacre was placed in a very visible place on campus. I thought it was respectful. Then I got a letter to the editor condemning those Christian-Fascists for ramming Christmas down our throats. Someone obviously did not know about the Montreal Massacre.

Well, even if they did know about it, maybe they didn't realize that was what the crosses were commemorating.

Hi Anna,
I am also part of a collective that produces a feminist radio show: "F-words and Ms. Conceptions" on CHSR. CHSR usually dedicates a Special Day of Programming to the Memorial, though not this year (lack of co-ordinators). We will still broadcast the Memorial live from downtown (I think), including the moment of silence.
In the past, I've usually talked about the implications of violence against women and played songs that dealt with the issue.

Denise DeMoura just published a poetry collection titled "Break the Silence" on Broken Jaw Press. If you get a chance, you may want to check it out...

Good luck with your radio programme!
