Marion Dewar and Carolyn Bennett are on CPAC tomorrow morning talking about the under-representation of women in the House of Commons.

The Forum entitled, "Women's Representation in the House of Commons: vox populis", organized by the Research Centre on Women and Politics (Ottawa University) and the Law Commission of Canada, will be broadcast by CPAC for the first time on November 18, 2003.

Women and Canadian Politics Tuesday, November 18 at 8AM ET / 5AM PT

The Research Centre on Women and Politics at the University of Ottawa and the Law Commission of Canada organized this forum in Ottawa to discuss the representation of women in the House of Commons. Among the speakers at this October 31st conference were Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett and former Mayor of Ottawa Marion Dewar.

It was nice to hear CBC guests talk about gender parity and a move away from the old boy's club in the Liberal party until you actually see what's happening on the ground. In Hamilton we have Tony Valeri being positioned to push out Sheila Copps when the riding boundaries are shifted in the new year. Torstar's Hamilton Spectator for Saturday November 29 has a front page article attacking Ms. Copps. By the way, Torstar CEO Robert Pritchard is being courted by Martin aides as a possible cabinet member.

Another female Hamilton MP, Beth Phinney was a supporter of Ms. Copps and Martinites are looking to have Frank D'Amico replace her as well. Mr. Martin may say he represents change but from where I sit it's more of the same.

Ms Copps has launched a libel suit against the Spectator claiming that Martin supporters are trying to sabotage her political career. Tony Valeri countered that if he was really trying to scuttle her career he would have done it before the Liberal leadership convention. This is a ridiculous claim since it would draw too much attention nationally and also since it is timed to affect a campaign she actually has a chance of winning.

I wouldn't mind it if Sheila left since she siphons a lot of the NDP vote during Federal elections but Martin really scares me.
