Just looking for some advice. I'm going to be eligible for benefits in a week, and there is a voluntary accidental death and dismemberment insurance plan that I can sign up for if I want to. But I have to pay the premium for it, unlike the rest of my benefits where my employer pays 100% of the coverage.

So my question is - would you bother with the AD&D coverage? To get the maximum - $500,000 - you have to pay $11.88 (for the family plan) per month. I've already got my own life insurance plan. I feel like there might be a catch with AD&D coverage, that it might be a rip-off due to exclusions.

If your company is with one of the major insurance players, I suspect that the plan is on the up and up. I've opted out of my A&DD insurance because at this point in my life I don't need more coverage than the basic life insurance I have. I'd rather keep the $12.

Not to be dark, but...are you someone more likely to die in an accident (to you drive a lot, work in high places, etc.). If not....you would probably be better off spending the $130/year on something else, IMO

Don't know if that's any help, but there ya go....

Yeah, that's what I figured too. I'm not someone who takes a lot of weird risks. I don't drive much (don't own a car), I have a desk job, and I don't travel a lot either except between Toronto and Mississauga on public transit. I think they'd win the wager.

I have a truck, but I don't drive much, and I manage to keep my insurance premiums below $100/month for two vehicles (small truck and a skidoo).

Michelle, are you already covered for long term disability (LTD) through your group plan or is this extra coverage the LTD portion? If you do have LTD, I would say not to take the extra coverage, but if not, you might want to consider it. In the unlikely and unfortunate event, that you do slip and fall, it is a lot easier to collect from your own policy than it is to go sue the shopping mall or parking lot owner etc.

You might want to call the broker and ask him/her to go over in detail what you would be covered for that you are not covered for now. Different policies may or may not provide coverage based on (a) the cause of the injury - ie. slip and fall versus car accident and (b) the type of damage/loss.

Granted, the broker is a salesperson and is trying to sell you insurance, but they will have to be honest with you and are usually pretty easy to deal with.

Hello Moderator Michelle,

If you are looking for good worker-oriented AD&D/life insurance plans, there are a couple places to try:

Working Enterprises Insurance is part of a cooperative owned by seven labour unions set up to provide affordable and quality insurance services to working people, without all the hassles and heavy legalistic BS normally found among insurance companies (especially when it comes to paying out benefits).

A lot of what they offer is pretty good. I know they have AD&D benefits for as low as $6 a month (of course, it won't be a huge amount of pay-out). They also have really solid home insurance plans. I don't know how much work they do in Ontario, but I do know they have some stuff going on there.

AIL--Canada is another union outfit, which I don't know that much about. My parents had life insure plans with them, they were quite efficient and made no bones about promptly paying.

Apparently, they are offering very cheap AD&D plans with low income folks.

Those are two to start with. If you do check them out, let me know what they tell you (again, I don't know how much they do in Ontario).
