I have to buy new appliances (fridge, stove, etc.), but I want to make sure they are energy-efficient. Does anybody know of a good source for this kind of info, preferably an objective source (not the companies themselves)?

Hmm. If you feel like doing a little poking around on the appliances themselves, the EnerGuide sticker on 'em will help you. Government regulations require them to be displayed.

The sad thing is how unavailable better, less energy-wasting appliances are... In Europe it is easy to find small washing machines that take up less space and use less water and electricity - here only "family-sized" ones are available, even the compact models take up far more floor space than the ones I used while staying in Paris last month, with the same capacity (enough for a single or couple). I had a hell of a time finding a small fridge for one person living near a public market and shops for veggies etc frequently. Do they only sell huge ones here so people (even singles or childless couples) fill them up with a lot of crap that goes bad?
