Bush caught on open microphone

quote:

SAINT PETERSBURG (AFX) - US President George W. Bush, caught on an open microphone, said that a key to defusing the Middle East crisis was for 'Hezbollah to stop doing this shit'.

Talking to British Prime Minister Tony Blair at a working lunch at the G8 summit, Bush also hinted that US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would take a bigger role in the crisis, and appeared to express frustration about UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

'I think Condi's going to go pretty soon,' the US president said, leaving Rice's destination unclear, though she is widely expected to travel to the region after a UN fact-finding team returns.

Later, Bush added that 'the irony is, what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit, and it's over,' though he does not specify who 'they' are.

The funny shit is, there is no evidence that Syria or Iran have control over Hezbollah; while they may fund and supply them, a lot of these "mid east experts" on CNN and the BBC have been saying that Hezbollah is pretty independent.

It wouldn't surprise me that Bush thinks that without any real evidence (like in Iraq)... he's a believer y'know.

How independent would Hezbollah be if Syria and Iran simply cancelled all funding and military supplies to them? With no independent source of arms and money that i can think of, i suspect they'd go bankrupt almost instantly.

If Iran and Syria had not decided to use Hezbollah for their proxy war after all this time then Lebanon today would likely be one of the most beautiful and prosperous countries in the region, and perhaps all of Asia.

So do you think Dubya will come up with a thoughtful, nuanced, fact-based response to this crisis? Here's what he said later in the same conversation:
quote:
'I'm just going to make it up. I'm not going to talk too damn long like the rest of them. Some of these guys talk too long.'

You're conveniently forgetting that several thousand Jews were slaughtered by Arabs in palestine during the 1936-39 period. But I guess to you only Arab lives have any value.

That I'd question although. If they were talking of independant from the Lebanon government then yes, that is quite true (and I think thats what CNN is referring to by that)

Both the Hamas and Hezbollah share certain links somewhere along the chain (CNN reported pretty indepth on that), and I wouldn't be surprised if that chain includes Iranian intelligence agents.

Maybe Bush should ask the Syrians to send their troops back into Lebanon since Hezbollah's aggressive actions seem to have escalated since they left.

Maybe there was something after all to the Syrian claim that their troops acted as a stabilizing force in Lebanon.

No I am not. Irgun layed the ground work for israel, seems only fair to let Hezbollah do the same, israeli style?

Put up your list and it might become obvious on how not to solve the problem. Bring it before an international court and let a more civilized less destuctive approach find blame and basis for reconcilliation.

This story is getting the best media attention I've seen in sometime... The headline writers are having a field day with this.

CNN is reporting it as 'The Shit heard 'round the world'
A couple others I've seen:

'No Sh!t Bush'
'Bush drops a S-bomb at the G8 summit'
'Bush to Syria : Stop (Sh)it'

Apparently he thinks this is the ironic part too

quote:
Bush replied: "See, the irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hizbollah to stop doing this shit and it's over."
I'm a lil out of the loop as to where the irony is.

Exactly, and that is why those who forced Syria out are to blame for this and may have actually planned it to come out this way.

I think you overestimate the planning abilities of the Bush administration.

I was only making the point that 'nature abhors a vaccuum.' In the absence of an effective Lebanese government, and the withdrawal of Syrian troops, the freedom of armed militant groups like Hezbollah to operate grows.

The real irony of GWB's comments was no doubt lost on him (i.e. that the Syrian government has less ability to influence Hezbollah's actions than it did prior to its troop withdrawal from Lebanon).

I think you underestimate those who put the Bush administration in its place!

As such, there is no irony.

If that were to happen I could easily see them taking on the shape of one of the Palestinian movements as they make their own rockets, although they are much less 'accurate' than the Iranian ones.

There are some very funny pictures in a Kos Diary today of Bush massaging Angela Merkel who looks scared out of her wits. This happened at the G8

I mention this only as a companion piece to the Shit comment, made while his mouth was very full of something.

The BBC's attempt to parse the off-the-record exchange between President Bush and PM Blair is like a Monty Python skit.

Linguistic Analysis

They strain so earnestly to confirm the Beeb's reflexive anti-Bush bias.

Umm Chairm, the entire world, including 2/3rds of Americans think Bush is an idiot. Clearly this moron needs no help from anyone to determine that. Only diehard Bush supporters care one bit about Herr Bush and how he appears. The sane majority of the country had already decided not to be associated with him.

If you cannot laugh at the BBC's interview of the linguist, then, maybe British humour is not your cup of tea.

Really, watch the video at that hyperlink. The Linguist is fun to watch as she tries to comprehend what the interviewer is getting at.
