Is there a Canadian on-line bookstore other than Chapters-Indigo?

I'd go to Amazon.com, but the $5 customs fee bugs the hell out of me.

Ottawa's Octopus Books has an online service

http://www.octopusbooks.org

or you could just walk on down to your local independent bookstore

*sarcasm mode*

I could walk to a local store? Why hasn't anyone informed me of this before now?!?!?! It's a Liberal conspiracy, it is!!!

*end sarcasm mode*

Nevertheless, thanks for the heads up on Octopus' on-line store. I happily surfed on over and placed an order.

I remember when they instituted that - it was in response to complaints that U.S. Customs was charging an even stiffer fee, making it cost-prohibitive for Americans to order small items from Canadian e-tailers.

I think that is an example of a "non-tariff barrier".

Since I'm 5 minutes north of a port of entry, I get my U.S. e-tailer orders shipped to a parcel depot in the border town of Blaine, WA, and I walk across and pick them up.

These days it's tougher to just bring stuff across and not get whacked on the nose if you fail to declare and they search your vehicle.

That's why I don't bring a vehicle - I just walk.

Does it make me evil that sometimes, occasionally, I sortofkindof fantasize about a shared currency just so that I can order books and merch from the States and not pay through the freakin' nose?

It does? Shucks.

Even if the currency was the same, Canada Post would still charge that damned $5 fee for handling the package.

As a ex-Indigo employee, I must say I'm absolutely thrilled by any book business that doesn't involve the Indigo-Chapters-Coles-WHSmith monopoly. I'm glad to hear of anindependent on-line book business.
