quote: A former Michigan congressman was indicted in Missouri today, accused of conspiracy, money-laundering and lying about lobbying for an Islamic charity with alleged ties to al-Qaeda.
The actual indictment is exceedingly interesting to afficionados..... http://www.detnews.com/graphics/2008/0116siljander.pdf
The U.S. government is formally alleging that Former Freedom Fighter Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and this Congressman, were involved in furnishing funds to an "orphanage" in Afghanistan, which was in fact an Al Quaeda front. See counts 34 through 41. quote: Back in the 1980s, Hekmatyar was a "freedom fighter" supported strongly by the Reagan administration. His radical Islamists received on the order of a billion dollars from the CIA to fight the Soviets, via Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence.

Ok, if reading the indictment was too boring....http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/01/16/exlawmaker-charged-in-te_n_81842.html The accused ex-Republican Congressman Siljander
quote: was elected to Congress initially with the support of fundamentalist Christian groups, and said at the time he won because "God wanted me in." In 1983, he claimed that "Arab terrorists" planned to kill him during a pro-Jewish rally; the FBI and Secret Service said they knew of no such plot. Siljander attended the rally wearing a bulletproof vest.
quote: Siljander said that during his tenure in Congress (1981-1987), he was angry when the Qur’an was read during the National Prayer Breakfast. He wrote to the Breakfast’s emcee: “How can you read the book of the devil at a prayer breakfast?”

Time magazine had a short piece on him when he replaced retiring conservative Republican David Stockman. Time titles its article "True Believer". quote: The man who beat him, and who last week swamped Rodebush by 3 to 1 in a special election to fill Stockman's seat: Mark Siljander, 29, a Fundamentalist Christian perhaps even more conservative than Stockman."I'm part of the silent majority that was heard Nov. 4 [when President Reagan was elected]," says Siljander. "My support comes from morally concerned citizens who are sick of the situation in this country." Siljander pledges to battle the Equal Rights Amendment, pornography, abortion, school busing and "big spending." He will champion the neutron bomb, the MX missile and prayer in public schools.
