What is McCain going to do to top Palin’s stemwinder from last night?

He’s not.

I heard this morning that the stage is going to be completely different tonight and that he’s going to have a townhall-like “conversation” the TV viewers. My guess is that he’s going to directly after the middle voters—the ones who are going to decide this election in eight weeks (on National Public Radio this morning, a poli-sci prof said that about 20% of the electorate is undecided).

So I'm wondering if there's any coded distinction between being a "Hockey mom" and being a "soccer mom". There are a few possibilities. There is the benign one, that there's no difference and her kids played hockey rather than soccer, which is not impossible. Another one is that hockey has a message of a more expensive sport where poor kids can't play, but my american roommate told me yesterday that was too far fetched as most americans are too unfamiliar with hockey to know it's expensive. It could also be she wants the positive impressions of soccer mom without some of the negative connotations that have grown attached, and maybe changing the label will work.

The possibility of it being a nefarious “coded message” is extremely unlikely. As your American roommate said, most Americans (unfortunately) don’t know anything about hockey and have never even seen a live game of hockey, let alone know that the sport is expensive.

Besides, most families that I know who have kids who play hockey are just average Jane and Joe Family.

It will be interesting to see the polls in the next day or so to see if Palin’s speech helped McCain.

After the wonderful speech that Obama gave in Denver, there was no opportunity to see what impact that speech had on voters (I suspect it would have been very positive). About twelve hours after Obama’s speech (eight of which people spent sleeping), McCain introduced Palin as his running mate and that sucked all of the media air out of Obama’s sails.

Interesting how all the Cons play from the same hand book, on how to silence your opponents.

People can say what they want about Jon Stewart, but last evening on the Daily Show, he made some pretty good attacks against the Repubs and their hypocrisy. He took on Rove's hypocrisy extremely well.

The funniest things were about the Repub Senator Thompson that Jon pointed out sounds and looks like Foghorn Leghorn and Lieberman who sounds and looks like Droopy Dog, thus establishing them as cartoon characters and not just any cartoon characters, but Looney Tunes ones.

He however forgot to point out that there is no better Looney Tunes character for Palin, than Miss Prissy

Hockey mom --- dog whistle to aggressive assertion of whiteness. Just as the double standard over teenage pregnancy is not just racial in the obvious sense, but also in a coded message to white supremacists that white people can still have lots of kids to buck "demographic eclipse" and replenish their presumedly rapidly depleting ranks.

Having watched quite a few years' worth of hockey moms in the stand of our local rink, I cannot disagree. They out-barked us dads.

The beautiful game, on the other hand, inspires less vocal passion. Or perhaps the hot weather mutes it.

Of course you do. You will read the most nefarious thing into what is written or said (even if it's not actually written or said).

Like I said before, Americans know about as much about ice hockey as they know about cricket...which is close to, but not precisely equal to, zero.

The hockey mom label does not need all Americans to be experts. This is a very close election, and if it just has a significant effect on say one American in ten then that is all that is needed for victory.

Btw, hockey is most popular in the Midwestern states, which happen to be all the most important swing states minus Florida (Michigan Ohio Pennsylvania and Minnesota).

Will ignore another of your gratuitous personal attacks. And will just say:

BS, and fabrications, where all the national "cricket teams" throughout the USA?

I guess that would mean the USA does not have a Olympic hockey team, nor a world women's hockey team either? In fact. wiki says it is more popular than soccer in the USA.

quote:
Sports in the United States are an important part of the national culture. However, the sporting culture of the U.S. is different from that of many other countries. Compared to any other nation, Americans prefer a unique set of sports. For example, soccer, the most popular sport in many other countries, is not as popular in the U.S. compared to the four most popular team sports, namely, American football, basketball, baseball, and ice hockey. The major leagues of each of these sports enjoy massive media exposure and are considered the preeminent competitions in their respective sports in the world. The preeminence of the major leagues is partially attributed to their strong financial power and huge domestic market, as well as the fact that relatively few other countries play some of their dominant sports, like American football, to any significant extent.

According to a recent story in Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal, the NHL, with an attendance average of 16,409 fans per game, was outdrawing the NBA by 108 fannies. If the figures hold for the rest of the regular season, it would mark the first time the NHL on average would outdraw the NBA since the 1987-88 season.

Sure, the lead has come largely from the NBA's decline, but you can't overlook what a psychological boost this is for the NHL. Just eight seasons ago, the NBA had a seemingly insurmountable 14.3% attendance lead.

So how did the NHL do it? Well, despite all the criticism the league has taken over the years for expanding faster than Dan Aykroyd's waistline, the NHL's strategy of going into markets where the NBA--or for that matter, professional football and baseball--dared not to tread, like Columbus, Nashville, and San Jose, has been a success.

But it's not just in virgin territory where the NHL is thriving. Take a look at the chart below. In the 15 markets where the NHL and NBA compete virtually head-to-head

Its popularity mirrors that of women's hockey, which made its Olympic debut in 1998 and has quickly taken root at the high school level. At least 50,000 girls and women now play, up from about 6,000 in 1991, according to USA Hockey, Inc., the sport's national governing body.

"If you look at the number of teams that have gone varsity as well as club programs, it's exploded over the last decade," said Michele Amidon, USA Hockey's director of women's ice hockey operations.

In Vermont, 23 high schools have added girls hockey since 2002, according to Bob Johnson, director of student activities for the Vermont Principals Association.

United States Hockey academy for girls grows with popularity of sport

Well, I guess you should not take your personal lacks, as being the case with others in the USA! So much for your "almost" zero fabrication.

A lot of them are. The Blackhawks have a 19,000 seat arena in a metro area of about 10 million people and they can't sell it out. Even here in Minnesota (the "State of Hockey"), I'm amazed at how many people have never been to a hockey game before.

I suspect that the rough order of popularity in America you'd find:

1. NFL football
2. NASCAR
3. College football
4. MLB baseball
5. NBA basketball
6. College basketball
7. PGA golf

Hockey sits way down somewhere with boxing, soccer, and tennis.

Again, you should learn to read. The wiki article says that hockey is the fourth most popular team sport. And, that is a distant fourth team sport.

In a country with over 300 million people, the Stanley Cup in 2007 only had a 1.1 TV share in America (only about one million households watched it). That's a microscopic share.

Attacks, praise stretch truth at GOP convention

excerpt:

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

I don't think it is code for anything, just a way of saying I am involved in my kids life. Of all the things she has said that I found offensive, this ain't one of them.

This is a Rove lie, exposed by Jon Stewart last night, that Huckabee is spewing, and he bought it, egg on his face or what?

Another lie is how Faux news, namely O'Reilly, is trying to spin the VP's daughter's teen pregnancy into nothing, after their/his overblown production against Jamie Lynn Spear's and her parents, where O'Reilly claimed it was her parents lack of parenting that caused their daughter's pregnancy. He called them pin heads even. But not so it seems for Palin, and the hyprocrit Repubs, it seems they do not blame Palin at all!

And the Repubs carried on and on about Bills' blowjob in the White House and the message it would send to children, yet think nothing of the message that Palin's drop out of school pregnant teen age daughter would send to teenagers across America.

It would seem like McCain's speech was worth not much eh?! Not even a little buzz of what he said, on here, compared to Palin's of last night!

ETA: Just saw the last portion of MCcains speech, and his walking off of the stage. His movements looked doddering, or something less than vigorus and responsive to his commands. Is this campaign going to be too much for him physically?

McCain's speech was weak on content and even worse on delivery. You could almost feel sorry for him, until you remember the evil thing.

The Cylons also support McCain.

More similarities between Colonel Tigh and Senator McCain

Is this a bunch of BS or the truth?

excerpt:

Had he not been the son and grandson of admirals, there is scant chance he would have been admitted to the U.S. Naval Academy. Given his behavior patterns and academics, had he not been the son and grandson of admirals, there is little doubt he would have been thrown out. Instead, in 1958 he managed to graduate 894 out of 899. Had he not been the son and grandson of admirals, he is no chance he would have been accepted into the prestigious naval flight training program over far better qualified officers. On his way to becoming a North Vietnamese ace, the aviator lost 3 expensive aircraft on routine, non-combat flights. Little was made of all that, because he was, you know, the son and grandson of admirals.

McCain’s most horrendous loss occurred in 1967 on the USS Forrestal. Well, not horrendous for him. The starter motor switch on the A4E Skyhawk allowed fuel to pool in the engine. When the aircraft was “wet-started,” an impressive flame would shoot from the tail. It was one of the ways young hot-shots got their jollies. Investigators and survivors took the position that McCain deliberately wet-started to harass the F4 pilot directly behind him. The cook off launched an M34 Zuni rocket that tore through the Skyhawk’s fuel tank, released a thousand pound bomb, and ignited a fire that killed the pilot plus 167 men. Before the tally of dead and dying was complete, the son and grandson of admirals had been transferred to the USS Oriskany.

Boom Boom

I just watch the USS Forrestal incident on the history Channel not more than 20 minutes ago. They laid out a different set of events.

The rocket was launch by a static charge off another aircraft, the rocket did hit McCain’s aircraft.

I believe McCain was a F4 pilot and not an A4 pilot.

The show is called “Shockwave”

I am not sure about his time at the Naval academy.

I'll have to look into it further, maybe the History Channel's version is revisionism?

There's other stuff at that anti-McCain group, including about his 'POW' story - this may be all a bunch of BS, I have no idea.

I just did a quick search, most sites list 134 dead.

And I was wrong McCain was an A4 pilot.

Most likely, and it would not be the first time Discovery and the History Channel have been used to invent history!

And McCain did fly a A4E Skyhawk.

From having a quick google around it would seem this story has legs.

from the same link as earlier

excerpt: PRISONER OR HONORED GUEST?

Jack McLamb is a highly respected name in law enforcement circles. After 9 years of clandestine operations in Cambodia and unmentionable areas, he returned home to Phoenix where he became one of the most decorated police officers on record. Twice McLamb was named Officer of the Year. He went on to become an FBI hostage negotiator. This man has stated that every one of the many former POWs he has talked with consider McCain a traitor. States McLamb, “He was never tortured…The Vietnamese Communists called him the Songbird, that’s his code name, Songbird McCain, because he just came into the camp singing and telling them everything they wanted to know.” McLamb further quotes former POWs as saying McCain starred in 32 propaganda videos in which he denounced his country and comrades.

Really? Any links to even one or two of those videos that he starred in?

If someone can produce even one of those nearly three dozen propaganda videos staring McCain, then I'll look into it further. Until then, it's total BS.

Boom boom below is apparently the original story that your quotes, or some of them are from, about McCain as POW, it is by a news media outlet in Newark OH. And there does not appear to be any law suits against them that I can find on google.

quote:
JOHN McCAIN
THE MOST FLAWED PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE IN HISTORY

It is now clear that what is left of the Republicon Party, after being fatally poisoned by the Bush administration, intents to commit suicide by nominating Senator John McCain (R-Hanoi) for the presidency. Where do I start?

THE EARLY YEARS ...

Roland C. Eyears sounds like a nutcase:

"McCain often crosses the aisle to block the confirmation of conservative judges with strict construction leanings. His record on taxes is clear; he likes them. Senator hyphen has co-sponsored ill conceived legislation that would boost gasoline prices by more than half a dollar a gallon. And he supports radical global warming measures that would significantly disadvantage the U.S."

If there was the tiniest grain of truth in what this guy claims, legit progressive publications who hate McCain, like "The Nation", would be all over this story.
