Okay, I like all kinds of video-games harking back to atari and 8 bit nintendo. I notice that video-gaming is still the realm of boys and men, especially games which have violent or non-constructive themes.

Back when Quake first came out, I was chomping at the bit to join a women's clan. Nothing came of that, but I still think the concept is neat.

If ever I set foot in a network gaming cafe, I'm usually the only female.

Any other girl gamers out there? Find the whole gaming community depraved?

What are your thoughts?

I know lots of girl gamers, and while most of the ones I know (including me) go for the fantasy-style (Diablo for me), most of them are also into racing, simulator and lone shooter games.

The only type that I rarely see women playing are the 'Wolfenstein' and 'Doom' style games.

I'm wondering, why the distinction?

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was a tremendous enjoyment to play for me (though I must admit incredibly misogynistic and violent) but I haven't found any female fans.

Likewise with Doom and Wolfenstein.

I did spend hours of my life on Diablo, Age of Empires and Warcraft 2. I know (few) other girls who like construction games, but draw the line at 'to the death' games like CounterStrike.

I'm a gamer.

I prefer fantasy and adventure games. I finished Return of the King for Ps2 really quickly and enjoyed it. Playing The Hobbit now, much more of a cute game, it's by Sierra .

Liked PacWorld, and I'm about 3/4 of the way through PacWorld II. I loved the first Spyro the Dragon, but the other ones make me nauseous, I have no idea why.

I loved the Mario games for the NES and Super NES. Played Final Fantasy thre and loved it.

I'm not a fan of first person shooter or any of the Grand Theft stuff. Too violent and mainstream.

We've got some new ones that I'll be starting when I get the time.

Bless Sierra for the King's Quest series. 3-7 kept me entertained for *years*.

I like video games, but I don't have great hand-eye coordination, so I tend to prefer turn-based role-playing or strategy games.

However, I'm very addicted to Ratchet and Clank right now, and really must get back to Kingdom Hearts at some point. And my partner swears I must try Dark Cloud 2. If I ever have the time.

Final Fantasy games I find fun, but I've never actually finished one.

There was an article in my local Canwest paper today, suggesting that Women over 40 play more online games than any other demographic. These stats came from AOL, I believe.

I figure that these women are no doubt playing different games than teenage boys, but still, it is interesting to note that Mom is playing more online yatzee or whatever than son is playing CounterStrike.

I've often wondered about the whole gender gap in the video gaming world. That one exists is undeniable, and there is a thesis somewhere for someone looking to explore it.

I've tried, and failed, to get arborwoman interested in video games on occasion. She had a brief flirtation with Myst, but just didn't have the interest, or the desire, to figure out the whole puzzle.

There seems to be a large proportion of the population, both genders, who see gaming as a 'waste of time'. This proportion, based on my unscientific personal experience, is significantly higher in women.

Somehow watching tv is ok for many people in the part of the population that thinks games are silly.

I think a lot of games are marketed, and designed, for the young male market. There may be a bit of a feedback loop as these folks then get into game design etc. later in life, but I've never met a marketer that wasn't looking for a new demographic to target, so that doesn't explain it completely.

I used to love basic "gun-and-run" games like Doom and Quake, and would play them rather intently. Mrs. Magoo didn't care to play the games themselves, but she did love to sit behind me and backseat drive. To her it was like an action movie that consulted her on occasion, and sometimes took her advice... 90% of which amounted to "Look out!!", with the other 10% being "Shoot that thing!". She used to also scream nicely when something would come blasting out of the shadows, thereby providing me with a primitive "surround sound" effect.

She typically didn't care for air combat games, like Janes WWII, probably because they're a little monotonous. I often find myself torpedoing my own ship or sucker-punching my wingman, just to see some fireworks. Somehow, when there's no opportunity to pick up a flamethrowing chainsaw, games get a little boring.

Finally I bought Descent, and its zero-gravity, three-degrees-of-freedom navigation made her queasy. Eventually I got bored of shooting robots in tunnels, and I don't game at all anymore.

Totally addicting. Although I don't play much anymore - 'cept for Sim computer games I used to love the Mario and Donkey Kong games. In University there was a seldom used old style Ms. PacMan games in the student bar. It drove me nuts to keep the highscore. No wonder I was always broke, quarter after quarter after quarter. I recently found one an old style PacMan game at the Calgary bus depot..... STAY AWAY

Like Mrs. Magoo, I am a spectator player, but only for particularly good games played by younger brother. System Shock 2 was quite watchable and entertaining. Beyond that, I myself stopped gaming years ago. My favorite game ever, though, is the 1990 Challenge of the Ancient Empires. You can download it for free as abandonware and run it still on Windows XP. It was suuuuch a good game.

I just had to share this wonderful game with everyone. Carry on.

I tried and failed to get my mom into Mortal Kombat. I even turned the blood setting off, and chose our characters as female. Nada. She prefers Win98 solitaire.

In a university dorm one night, I roundly kicked ass at MKII. All challengers were male, and there was somehow shame associated to losing to me, a girl. This left a bad taste in my mouth. What difference does it make who you lost to, you lost period.

My rabble handle even comes from my network gaming excursions. It sounds "rough" and male, and derision need not break out because someone lost to a girl. Though I always contemplated what the difference would be if I network gamed as "sweet'n'sexy_lilangel" or something equally vomitous.

Ohhh! I remember wanting Ancient Empires so badly back in 91-92.

If I weren't so into politics now I'd be playing the massive console RPG collection have accumulated over the past 2 years for dirt cheap (Cornwall has really good pawnshops, and EBay never hurts) more often. :-)

Rare RPGs are so easy to find here that I actually had a spare copy of Chrono Trigger to give to my brother.

I've been addicted to Civ III (actually the whole series) and Morrowind at different points. while I cant' play Morrowind right now, surprisingly, Civ is one of the few things I can do with one hand--important when carrying a sleeping baby who won't let you put them down. So I'm developing my Civ abilities exponentially right now.

An ex-boyfriend of mine was so addicted to ChronoTrigger, I don't think I saw him until he finished it.

If you like Civilization, you'll love Alpha Centauri. And, as a leftie, I'm rather pleased that in Alpha C., for most purposes the Planned and Green economy types work better than the Free Market.

I flat out loved alpha Centauri, and found it better than Civ 3. I have had it on my computer for about 4 years now, and still play it.

I'm still addictively playing Civ II - the third hasn't come out for the PS2 yet. (Don't tell me if it has...no, wait, do.)

Getting the third one could be very dangerous to my free time.

And like a couple of others, I'm a good backseat gamer for some of the more hand-eye coordination games - I love to watch my partner play them, but I get too easy frustrated myself.

Hi- I think this is a great topic. I, too, am subject to the boy's club. Worse, I find that I practically have to slaughter a boy's character before he'll acknowledge that I'm a serious gamer. That, or ascend the 60th Secret-Level Temple of whatever. *grr*

Anyway, my faves are: Warcraft, Black/White, Red Faction, Doom, AoEmpires, Neverwinter Nights, and Stronghold. Recently of late I find myself playing Minesweeper, as well. *stupid landmimes... gah...*
