A fire, apparently caused by a short-circuit in an electric heater, destroyed the 80-year-old Jail #2 in Quito, where 860 inmates were housed. Two inmates were killed, and five firefighters injured. No damage is reported to surrounding houses.

The inmates are being relocated to other jails, but the entire Ecuadorian penitenciary system is desperately overloaded. The total capacity of the 36 jails in Ecuador is 7,000, but there are presently more than 12,000 inmates.

Unofficial reports say that more than 30 inmates are "missing" after the fire, presumably having escaped during the chaos.
