Today's G&M has the Report on Business magazine's second annual ranking of corporate social responsibility.

Among other high-placers are Dell, Wal-Mart (ahead of Rona, a highly unionised company), Talisman, Shell Canada, Imperial Oil, CanWest Global, Nike, Gap, and McDonald's.

However, Citizens Bank (Owned by VanCity Credit Union, it seems?) Mountain Equipment Co-op, Suncor (huge developers of renewable energy) and the CBC are also highly well regarded.

Is CSR a joke, merely a ploy to "green-wash" or "ethics-wash" bad corporate press?

Opinions?

By what criteria does Wal-Mart and Talisman rank high?

I'm usually suspicious of CSR. That's not to say that there aren't any responsible companies but I feel we should regulate a minimum responsibility and not rely on their good graces. That's why I think emphasis on voluntary aspects are usually a way of pre-empting the demands for regulation.

From Suncor website:

Near Fort McMurray in northern Alberta, Suncor recovers bitumen from oil sand and upgrades it to refinery-ready feedstock and diesel fuel. Suncor pioneered the world’s first commercially successful oil sands operation in 1967 and today, with total production nearing the one billion barrel mark and enough reserves to sustain production for the next 50 years, the company remains a leader in oil sands development.

Sounds great.

They write the names of big corporate conglomerates on little itty-bitty pieces of paper. Then they throw them up in the air and the ones that land "face-up" make the Globe & Mail's "CSR" list.
