Earlier this week, I got a message from my bank that my debit card had been cancelled, and I was to contact them at once.

Unfortunately, I got this message when I woke up-- after the bank hand closed for the day.

So, I spent a night shift concerned that I had somehow screwed up with my banking. NSF check? I couldn't think of how that could happen. But then, I do all my banking in my head and considering my relationship with math-- similar to M.C. Escher's relationship with geometry-- I was thinking anything was possible.

I found out in the morning that the police had told the bank to capture my card. Apparently, I used my card at a business where employees were double swiping it, or had a lap top tied in with the phone line, or something.

No damage to the bank account. He he. little damage could have been done anyway.

BUT I think I'm going to be carrying around cash more often now.

AND, I think I should be told what business it was where my card was compromised. The police here seem to be awful selective on whose names get released to the public.

I think I should have the right to know the who and why of why my card was captured.

My wife had a similar thing occur with her credit card. The business was a full serve gas station franchise operated by organize crime. The bank told us the details of the operation. Apparently they were using the information to create false identifications.

Me too. But at least your bank told you, Tommy. I went in to a store and tried to purchase someting. I swiped a couple of times and each time it reported that funds were unavailable.

So, I walkked to a branch ATM to check out my balance which should have been well more than adequate. Put my card in, punched in my number, and the machine promptly ate my card.

That was on Saturday. When I called they could not tell me anything. I had to wait until Monday to call my branch and find out what was going on. And it was the same sort of information yout bank had the decency to calll you about.

My credit card company called me a couple of weeks ago to ask about a string of purchases that looked suspect to them -- and they were. No problem, said the woman I talked to: you pay only your own charges, and we'll go after the other ones. We agreed on which were which, and I showered her with thanks.

This coming week, though, I'm going to have to follow up again: I just checked the account on my computer, and no one has changed the false amount due. Sigh. I hate fuss.

Does anyone know which ATM's they were using? On the news they have said there is a lot of them in Kamloops, I have been hassling for a month over my bank balance - and being told if I didnt give my pin number to someone then I have to have spent the money. Now I see this on the news, they also said not everyone has been notified and it is WAY bigger than they thought it was. In other words they havent recovered ALL the bogus bank cards or credit cards yet.

I have a VISA card and they have in the past put a hold on my card with a request I call them - which I have done from the store I was in and was asked "Have you gone on some kind of spending spree or what?" A tad inconvenient but I appreciate that they have a system that monitors this kind of "unnatural" behavior on the part of the card holder. It was me who had made the purchases. But now this thing with my account balance has me worried -

The only bank machine I use other than my own banks is an "Amicus" at my local variety store.

Used to use, that is.

I use the same gas station all the time-- though that's no garantee.

The only unusual place I used my card recently was at "Bowring", to purchase some champagne flutes that were at a good price.....and oh, the Market Square LCBO, come to think. And "Silver City".

The last place I used it before it was captured was my local Home Hardware.

It did come up "NSF" at a variety store I don't usually use.....he he he....and I don't know if it was because it was captured, or because it was a legit "NSF".

Mugs game, trying to figure it out, I suppose.

Fortunately, I have more than one debit card, so I didn't have to scrounge any emergency money off of anyone.

I think I'm going to keep a small amount of cash on hand from now on.
