Fine, I try not to use other banks' ATM machines anyway. As long as MY bank doesn't start charging me to use their ATM machines, and the banks don't start charging a surcharge for direct payment purchases, I don't really care what CIBC does.

That it is easy to avoid does not make it better.
What I am interested in knowing: when you use a white label ATM (privately owned and Ready Cash, BTW, is owned by the CIBC) you are warned there will be an additional surcharge of whatever amount and given an opportunity to cancel the transaction. Will CIBC machines provide the same warning?
It should be noted, also, the white label ATM's will generally charge $1 to $1.25 per transaction. With CIBC charging up to a $1.50, you can bet the white labels will up their fees. And while it is an easy charge to avoid in urban centers, in many smaller communities the only ATM to be found is a white label in the local variety or general store. But what do we care about them? let 'em move to the city.

Anyone tried the President's Choice no-fee banking? Apparently, they can affort it since they don't own buildings, facilities, machines, don't employ tellers and other personnel as other banks do. I've heard it on a CBC show called StreetCents (or was it the Reality Check, I forget). The reporters compared all major banks and the PC banking service was the only one gratis. Anyone had any experience with it? I'm thinking of dumping the ultra-greedy Scotia Bank and switch to the PC card.

I use 'em. Love 'em.
The only problem I've heard is that people with unstable job histories might have problems getting the holds taken off. Also you can't use their debit cards in the USA because they're not on the Plus System.
For me, tho, I was able to get the holds raised and the hold period shortened initially and over time the holds have come off so now I get at the first $500 instantly, and the rest after 5 days.

What do you mean, what kind of holds? Are you saying that they won't let you access you deposit when you wish to do so? And that you have to do it in stages? Or are you talking about a non-chequing account?

Checking account, holds. They hold deposits for a certain number of days except for a chunk you can get at right away. They love payroll deposits and their holds are a little easier wrt Interac payments.
They have savings accounts too. And RRSPs, and even credit cards.

RBC can put out as many of those surcharge machines as they want, so long as they don't replace the regular RBC ATMs that already exist. The only reason I stay with RBC is because the machines are so ubiquitous -- but if that isn't so anymore, PC's looking mighty attractive.
