Here in victoria, the times colonist that is a buck and a bit in the shops is free on the early busses.
What is going on?
I dont mind reading the thing to pass a half hour in the mornings BUT!
I mean, there is competition laws here, isnt there?
What about the small shop owners? They are being shitted on, are they not?
And no point in a distorted front page headline to sell a rival paper now because I am read out by the time I get to work.
and what about the other paid for newspapers, how do they compete against this type of competition?
And I mean that for real. The advertizing component of a paper's price is important but a free paid for paper is nutty in my opinion.
It might get a few more people on the busses but what would really get lots of people on the busses is them adhereing to the schedule!
I HATE it when a bus is 2 or 3 minutes early (which is normal some evenings)
So why the free papers on early busses?
I blame the "BC is the BEST place in the world" campaign for this. That paper must have got a bunch of money from that campaign and doesnt need to actually sell papers any more!
Anyway, your thoughts please. (And I do not really know where this post should go) depends on the responses, i guess.

They're probably trying to compete with the free metro dailies. Here in Toronto, 24 Hours and Metro are free dailies targeted at transit riders. Although they're run by two major papers (The Star and the Sun, if I'm not mistaken), I'm betting newsstand sales of the big dailies have gone down.

In any BC city, free newspapers can be considered more dry bedding for the homeless.

I don't like free newspapers, actually. I think that, litter-wise and environmentally, they're a really, really bad idea.

We have a free newspaper here, paid for by advertizing, but it's also available online here. We get about 30 copies delivered to a nearby store, less than half of them get picked up, I guess the rest get thrown in the trash. I read it every week, to test my French (mine's not very good, I admit).
