The high court in NY ruled that the NY state constitution does not require that the state recognize or permit SSM. The court has, essentially, put the issue in the lap of the legislature.
I hope that the legislators move swiftly to enact legislation to permit SSM. But, in any case, it's just a matter of time before that will occur in NY.

Yes, Sven,
Whatever happens in the short and even medium term, SSM is as inevitable as the sunrise. And there's not a GD thing the right wing can do about it.

Did anyone notice that the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled today that the voters could decide whether to ban SSM in the state? This is the same court, by the way, that first permitted SSM in Massachusetts in the first place.
Interestingly, I think it's a slam dunk for the Massachusetts legislature to pass the constitutional amendment banning SSM (only 50 of the 200 legislators need to vote to amend the constitution, which seems like a bizarrely small percentage--I would have expected something like a 75% figure being needed to authorize a constitutional amendment). Given the laughably low threshold needed to pass the amendment out of the legislature, the real battle will be in 2008 when the amendment will likely go before the voters.
I hope that even in the short period of time that passes between now and then that the voters will see that allowing SSM in their state has caused no harm and is, in fact, a very positive part of Massachusetts society.
