A prankster gets women to sign a petition AGAINST WOMENS SUFFRAGE..... hilarious... but scary

http://youtube.com/watch?v=JUP9Jm9SqvY&search=women's%20suffrage

How could something so serious be lost on those who should own it.

Ignorance is dangerous,
GT

Ha! Well, to be fair, they probably were just all thinking about "ending women's suffering", and maybe thinking he was speaking formally about it. After all, "suffrage" is not a word commonly used anymore. I think I was an adult in my 20's before I knew what the word meant, and only because I had read an Anne of Green Gables book that mentioned "Suffragettes".

I think this goes into the "you can get people to sign a petition for anything" folder.

The Ontario curriculum in grade 10/11/12 cover the suffragette movement. Perhaps not as indepth as ought be done, but it is there.

That's really fantastic!!!!!!! I 've never heard of any curriculum in Quebec that included it...even at the University I went to there was hardly any women's history in the clases I took, or in the Women's studies classes I took- I was a History major, and Canadian history was obligatory to take...the social history should be taught as well as it is equally of import, not just poltical history like getting the vote, as they are of equal importance.
On a different note I also wonder what effect the camera had on these kids, as I got the impression that someof them knew and signed it anyways...

I think it's more a lack of a developed vocabulary than a knowledge of women's history.

I thought it was funny, though the second video of the series could use a better host.

That's probably it. But still, if someone handed me a petiton that simply said "end women's suffering", I don't think I would sign it. The vagueness of the demand would make me suspect that there was some hidden agenda being pushed.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing! Why didn't they think to ask, "What do you mean, end women's suffering? Who is this? How are they going to end it?"

See statement above re: "you can get people to sign a petition for anything".

Generally speaking, having lots of people sign a petition is more indicative of the degree of effort supports are willing and able to expend to get the signatures, than it is of the actual volume of support for the contents of the petition. (Note that this is the reason the Chief Electoral Officer's report a few years back suggested getting rid of the requirement for nomination signatures - they've never been a real indication of support.)

Probably so. It remind me of the ruckus over the word "niggardly" in Washington DC a couple of years ago.

Maybe re-marketing "Womens right to vote" to make it more appealing.....

Like that cheezy milk comercial...

Bring out the "Suffragettes" to sing their track "Don'tcha wish your girlfriend could VOTE like me?"

"Don'tcha?"

On his deathbed, my grandfather managed to convince several doctors and nurses, and much of his family (me included) to sign a petition to ban dihydrous monoxide, which he claimed was a dominant chemical in his cancerous tumours.

He wasn't lying - it's a chemical compound found in every single cancerous tumour around. It's used heavily in a wide range of industrial activity. There is almost zero willingness on the part of our elected leaders to do anything about it either.

Annually it kills lots of people directly, and who knows how many people indirectly? It is found in high percentages in many leading soft drinks, and even a lot of fruit juices that you can find on the shelf. Coffee is full of the stuff.

My grandfather was a good man, with a hell of a sense of humour. You can get people to sign a petition about anything.

I think this web site will explain the seriousness of this matter.

ETA: This FAQ from that site is particularly helpful.

I think it is a lack of both..anyone who has studied the later would know what a suffragette is...I do admit I laughed as well, but on the ither hand it isn't really funny when you consider A) what they were rejecting and B) that what/who is studied in schools at any level is what/who is considered of import -and the master narrative put out there is that women never did anything that important- ie. Colombus wasn't a woman, women in his time staid home and homemakers aren't of import

This clip just shows how ignorant, stupid, or unattentive many people are. In a funny way.

Nothing to get upset about.

Because nobody wants to take away women's right to vote.
