Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, has resigned. A senior administration official said he would announce the decision later this morning in Washington.

Legacy of torture and spying remains

Yes, heard this on the news this AM, and that Bush was going to put forward the head of Homeland security to take Gonzales place.

Thank you. My slightly increased level of confidence has been shattered already all over again.

You been sleeping that last 8 years?

Seriously though, every time in this administration someone quits, they actually seem to slide further into the evolutionary cess pool for the replacement.

Yep, pretty sad.

Going now means Bush can make a recess appointment - i.e. no requirement for Senate confirmation of the appointment.

This is no reason to let Gonzo off the hook, and I hope the Dems put him in jail. Of course they won't, but they should.

His resignation is effective Sept. 17th. Doesn't the Senate reconvene before then? Wouldn't that eliminate the option of a recess appointment?

Good question. Does Bush have to wait until he's gone to make an appointment, or can it be an 'acting' role until Gonzo is gone?

I don't know, but I'd bet a lot of money that Gonzales and the White House do. I wouldn't be shocked if the Senate reconvenes on the 18th of September or something.
