Republicans vote against consideration of a bill that would extend federal representation to the overwhelmingly African-American population of D.C.

No taxation without representation, indeed.

well, I think it's more complicated than that;
true, D.C. has had an unacceptable non-voting status federally, whether the majority has been white or black, for 2 centuries since its founding in 1800

but now, D.C. is trending white again -- likely to be majority non-black in a decade, say demographers, following recent gentrification trends:

will better-connected yuppie whites correct the political imbalance? stay tuned.

in any case, this is just one of several big US cities that is likely to swing back from black to white, or at least mixed-ethnic, majorities in the next few years;
others include Atlanta, and maybe Oakland (the smallish black population is also in steep decline in yuppie San Francisco)

expensive housing means changing demography

expensive housing

???

You must have missed this:

quote:
The US housing sector has suffered a blow as demand for homes fell dramatically to a six-year low amid tightening lending conditions, according to realtors.

Economists had expected pending home sales to fall 2 per cent, but instead they fell 12.2 per cent in July, said the National Association of Realtors yesterday.

The record drop shook financial markets and suggested that the global credit crunch had hit the real economy, raising fears that the worst housing downturn in 16 years could deepen.

ETA: I don't doubt there is a trend of white people back to cities. But I bet that has a lot to do with public transit availability and rising gas prices.

DC's non-representation always baffled me...
