Can't find a fast link to this but the provincial NDPers are putting forth a private members bill to increase min wage to ten dollars.

Let's imagine this passes (which it won't). What are the results? What happens when small businesses, like mine, who have increasing costs across the board and decreasing revenues, can't afford to hire workers?

CBC

This is a private members bill put forward by newly-elected Cheri Dinovo. It passed second reading this am and will now go to committee. Still is is very unlikely to go any further, both the libs and the cons are against it.

Personaly I think Dinovo aimed a little high. With minimum wage sitting at $7.75 a jump all the way to $10 would strike many as too much. What I believe may be good about this bill (and in fact what I think Dinovo was attempting when she put it forward), is that it will stir up debate. And while, min. wage may not see a big increase now, a galvinized public could put pressure on the gov. to increase it in the near future.

Let me think

1: Minimum wage earners won't have to visit the food bank to feed their families.

2: Government won't have to subsidize minimum wage workers so they can live above the poverty line.

A: Maybe all workers should get benifits commenserate with the proportion of time they work compared to full time workers so when they retire they have something more to look forward to than dying in total poverty!

3: Business that exploit minimum wage earners will go out of business!

4: If minimum wage employeers all have to raise their wages and all have to raise their prices is this bad? Maybe consumer would appreciate minimum wage products more and not treat them as disposable land filler.

Downsides??????

As an employeer, I don't pay minimum wage. Good people cost money and keeping them a long time is more cost effective than training minimum wagers who don't care about your business.

Good Day
