Tasks and Responsibilities
Identification of businesses and industries that hire predominately or a large number of young workers.
Inform, educate, and generally promote awareness among young workers of their statutory rights in the workplace; human rights laws that prohibit discrimination and sexual harassment, worker rights under employment standards and labour legislation, workplace health and safety regulations.
Communicate with young workers by providing written materials, meeting with individuals and groups of workers, telephone, and by internet. Liaise with representative bodies such as student organizations.
Become knowledgeable of workplace rights, respond to queries and requests for information and assistance. Identify problems and refer individuals or groups to the appropriate authorities or organization for assistance.
Maintain a record of results, responses, and course of action taken to assist young workers with workplace rights.
Qualifications and Skills
Applicants must be between the age of 16 and 30 years old, have been enrolled in full time studies and are going back to full time studies in the Fall.
Enrolled in college or university. Prefer: first, second, or third year student with an interest in civil or labour law, social sciences, political science, or labour studies.
Good literacy skills, ability to speak in public, and communicate with young workers. Friendly disposition and ability to get along with others.
Committed to the philosophy and ideals of the labour movement, desire to assist others with their democratic and legal rights, and to help young workers improve their workplace environment.
Responsible, conscientious, dedicated, and able to produce results with limited supervision.
Computer and keyboarding.
Work Area: Greater Vancouver – bus pass provided.
Pay and Benefits:
$16.00 per hour based on 32 hours per week – normally Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but flexible hours may be required.
