Sorry to post this in the anti-racism space as it could fit equally well in several forums.

There was some discussion about a SSM forum... that seemed to evolve (or maybe I evolved it) into a brief discussion about the use of a forum to discuss queer/gay (yet to be decided term) issues.

As I look around it seems that a forum that deals with gay/lesbian/transgendered/bisexual/two-spirited, etc issues is obvious by its absense.

There are forums about youth issues, racism, feminism, etc... why not for discussion of non-straight issues (and no, Im NOT suggesting that as a title).

Some of the arguments I read against this idea were:
a. it would bring out the homophobes - probably true, but dont the others bring out the racists, the chauvinists, etc?
b. having threads posted all over the board in various forums that are related to g/l/b/t, etc allowed others to become more informed. I guess thats true - but that is an argument against having forums and organization in general.

Sandy

It is true, discussion about sexism, racism, sexuality,.. would bring out the sexists, racist and homophobics,... and all kind of bigots however that should not stop open discussions about these issues.

Along the way the bigots would make it unsafe for many to speak however many other would continue to speak. Not having a forum dedicated to the specific topic of sexuality G/L/Trnas/.. in fear of homophobics attacks would allow the oppresser to control everything.

I find it neccessary to have a visible thread for the topic of sexuality, queer issue.

I was really into the idea of having a queer issues forum until I read James' post in this thread which made me realise that many folks on babble, if we shuffled all the queer stuff into one forum, wouldn't have any reason to look at it. I would because I'm interested in it, but I don't know if that holds for others.

I am in full favour of making babble even more inclusive of queer/GLBTTQI2 issues and topics, and that should really resolve the problem of homophobic trolls if we make genuine moves toward that; we'd be equipped to deal with it more effectively. My fear is that by making a seperate forum, we'd be building unnessecary barriers.

I don't get it. If there can be a feminism forum, why not a gay forum? It only makes logical sense.
I must be dense. Men visit the feminism forum, so I imagine hetrosexuals would visit the gay forum. I don't understand the arguments against it. It reminds me of the kind of paternalism that says 'we must protect these women and not let them have their own forum because to do so would just invite problems.'

Except that I am speaking for myself, and I identify as queer. Although I don't like the idea of more trolls on these boards, that's not my concern, my concern is that people who don't already care about homophobia/heterosexism may continue on that path if we create yet another forum.

How about... as far as I can tell, most or all of the queer babblers don't want one, and we feel quite comfortable discussing our issues in the appropriate forums, whether regional, news, politics, youth, science, culture, banter?

Why stop with one Queer forum? If our issues can't be discussed in the same forums as heterosexual issues, let's duplicate all the forums and have straight and queer versions.

Ambivalent.

I support this. Though I'm not entirely optimistic (then again why not)

Why would the inclusion of such a space require shuffling the "queer" issues into any specific forum? It could *gasp* just be a space where unique, interesting, dynamic, multifaceted discussions can occur. Maybe alternative perspectives can add some insight to previous discussions? Maybe it could be disaster or a site of ambivalence? Who knows?

I do think such a forum would require an insanley talented moderator though. No doubt.

Can the feminists have their own water fountain too? *G* Well, I guess if no one wants it then what would be the point?

I didn't mean to be nasty, Rev... I meant it tongue-in-cheek (hence the ) — sorry if it didn't come out that way.

As Insurrection says, it could turn out to be a hit, or a miss. Or just languish, like the Northern forum. If someone wants to try it. I don't feel strongly enough about it to complain. I just wonder if there's a need, really.

And Insurrection has another good point about the moderating — it could be a headache.

It would have to be a member of the gay/lesbian community to moderate it fairly. At least, that's my opinion. I could be wrong.

Interesting replies. Most of the logic is completely lost on me - a "queer" [shuddering at the use of the term].

I would be opposed (mildly, mind. If it happens I won't be upset) because (as a queer person) I see sexuality linked inextricably to sex, gender, and the social pressures that surround those "qualities," and I believe we already have a forum for that: The feminism forum.

So, Meades you suggest that the l/g/b/etc issues be posted in the feminism forum?

I think we are tucked away into places where our issues are "made to fit" far too often... Ive seen gay issues and rights put into categories like feminism and racism both officially and unofficially.

I didnt make the suggestion to exclude others (yes, I know that many of you feel that others would be excluded either by choice or function) or to attract negative comments. As much as I question the concept of "gay community" I do think that gay people can benefit from having a space in which they can discuss areas of commonality while still allowing for the education of the masses through passive reading of posts or actively participating.

Oh well... Im new here and should have lurked longer before jumping into the deep end! I will try to back up and listen and be quieter... however its not one of my strong points so... no promises!

Tut Tut! None of that, please! Just 'coz you're new is no reason to "rein in" your opinions and ideas. Speak up! Your opinion is as valid as anyone else's, and doubtlessly more constructive and worthwhile than some of the disingenuous types who come here "questioning" SSM, and who feel no such need to "listen and be quieter". So speak up!
