I wasn't sure whether to post this in the North section on babble or here. When I heard this on the news this morning, the focus was on the Canadian Forces going to Alert to make sure that Inuit from Greenland aren't coming over to hunt on Canadian land, so I decided on this forum.

What the hell? What, this is a national security threat? Some Inuit - who, by the way, SHOULD be free to come and go on THEIR land as THEY please, without worrying about colonialist borders - might be wandering into the Canadian Arctic? Oh heavens to Betsy, not that!

Would this not be issue primary for the RCMP or the maybe even the Coast Guard? I can see the military providing support to either organization however I can not see why this is a military lead operation.

At least the majority of the soldiers on these missions are either Natives or Inuit.

I have a few quick questions?

Are there any treaties with the Greenland Inuit?

Is this the first year this has taken place hunt has taken place?

Are there enough Polar Bears in this region to allow for a hunt without endangering the species?

Why is there only a single RCMP officer on this patrol?

Why is there not a federal wildlife officer included on this patrol?

Apparently there may be one:

Joined by a member of the RCMP, the team will look for evidence of incursions into the area by Inuit from Greenland to hunt Canadian polar bears. The team may include a federal wildlife officer.

The patrols start on the 24th of March, does not leave much time for getting a person ready for the mission.

Well, I assume they did the planning before they did the press release.

From my experience when someone from the plans department says “there may be a member from another government department or a piece of equipment on the mission”, it usually means that they thought of it and it will not likely happen for whatever reason(s).

I am willing to bet that there will be no wildlife officer on this patrol starting tomorrow.

I hate military press releases, they are usually written by people that do not understand the mission they are discussing and they are often written poorly.

It is good we are becoming aware of the issues of the north, playing out on the people who have always lived there.

I am posting a new thread about Lake Athabasca.
Frightening.
The fish have cancer, like they used to here in Hamilton Harbour, and don't anymore.
And the people.
and then politics.
crap.

Air Force News 26 March 07

"The 24-member patrol includes members of 440 Transport Squadron based in Yellowknife and members of the Regular Forces and Canadian Rangers as well as a representative of the RCMP."

Looks like the wildlife Officer did not make the trip.

Better get used to this. The Danes have figured out that Canada's Armed Forces are not equipped to defend Canada's territorial claims in the arctic. The Danes, on the other hand, are armed to the teeth in Greenland.

Interestingly, a great deal of Denmark's arctic weaponry is supplied by Canadian manufacturers.

Their Inuit forces are much more heavily armed than the Canadian Rangers which are Canada's Inuit forces.

The Wikipedi article is more detailed than the Canadian Ranger article on the DND site.
